 A-Scan Biometry and Ultrasound Principles - OU101

This course is designed to assist ophthalmic medical personnel in developing the skills related to performing accurate applanation and immersion a-scan biometry. In addition, ultrasound principles are addressed with the purpose of providing the student with an understanding of how sound waves travel through both solid and liquid structures in the eye during a-scan measurement.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Discuss basic A-scan principles
  • Describe the use of the transducer probe, setting gain properly, adjusting the gates, and proper spike height
  • Discuss how compression can effect accuracy as well as what is normal and abnormal when taking readings
  • Describe how to perform contact or applanation biometry
  • Describe how to perform immersion biometry
  • Discuss common errors when performing contact and immersion biometry
