This course discusses ophthalmic anatomy and physiology at a level appropriate for ophthalmic medical personnel. The course is designed to assist ophthalmic medical personnel in understanding the anatomy and physiology of the eye. Sections of the eye that are covered in the course are: the fibrous, vascular, and nerve layers; the ocular media; bony orbit; ocular adnexa; the extraocular muscles, and the visual pathway.

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

• Discuss the elements of the fibrous, vascular, and nerve layer of the eye.
• Describe the bones in the orbit, and the purpose of the openings in the orbit.
• Discuss the functions of the eyelids, eyebrows, eyelashes, accessory glands, and lacrimal apparatus.
• Describe the function of the extraocular muscles, and be able to define heterotropia, heterophoria, and orthophoria.
• Discuss the structure of the visual pathway, and describe common visual field defects associated with pathway structure.
