 Assisting the Glaucoma Specialist - GL104

This course will present an overview of the role of the assistant working with the ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of the glaucoma patient. After reviewing the definition of glaucoma, attention will be given to the importance and type of documentation necessary for the patient who presents with glaucoma. The assistant's role in preparing the patient for a glaucoma surgical procedure will be addressed.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Discuss the Definition of Glaucoma
  • Describe Primary Open-Angle, Angle-Closure, Secondary, Normal Tension, and Pigmentary Glaucoma
  • Discuss how cataracts and glaucoma can cause vision loss
  • Describe how applanation and air-puff  tonometry are used in the management of glaucoma
  • Discuss the different methods of ophthalmoscopy used in the management of glaucoma
  • Discuss how Visual Field perimeters are used by physicians in the management of glaucoma
  • Describe general rules and common methods patients can follow with regard to instilling eye drops
  • Discuss methods patients can use to remember taking their medications on-time
  • Describe the common side effects of  the most common types of glaucoma medications
  • Discuss helpful ways to communicate better with patients, so that patients have a better understanding of their treatment plan
