This course is designed to assist ophthalmic medical personnel in developing the skills related to handling special patient problems during and after the subjective refractometry session. It is not a step-by-step instruction in how to perform subjective refractometry and the assumption is made that the student has some basic knowledge regarding the subjective refractometry process.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the fogging, and duochrome technique.
  • Identify methods of troubleshooting sphere, cylinder, and reading add problems that patients might have during a refractometry session.
  • Understand methods of performing refractometry on patients who have facial or spinal handicaps, low vision, nystagmus, and high power prescriptions.
  • Describe solutions to problems that patients experience with new spectacle prescriptions.
  • List proper methods for instilling eye drops and applying ointments in the clinical setting.
  • Describe methods patients can use to properly instill eye drops and apply ointments away from the clinical setting.
